Dirty Down Jackets: I Don’t Even Wash Them: I Clean Sleeves, Collar, and Pockets Without Wetting Them in 10 Minutes

Padded or down jackets are often expensive and delicate garments. With daily use, the most exposed areas—like the sleeves, collar, and pockets—tend to get dirty quickly, accumulating grease, dust, or scuff marks.

However, it’s not always possible to machine wash them or take them to the dry cleaners. Furthermore, frequent washing can damage the filling, distort the garment, or reduce its warmth. That’s why having a quick and safe method to clean them without water is so convenient. Here are two simple techniques you can use at home that work as a true alternative to dry cleaning.

1. Cleaning with a Salt and Starch Mixture
Ingredients needed:

2 tablespoons of fine salt.

2 tablespoons of cornstarch (cornflour) or any other available starch.

A few drops of water.

Step-by-step procedure:
Mix equal parts salt and cornstarch.

Add water drop by drop until you obtain a thick, smooth paste.

Apply the paste directly to the stains on sleeves, collars, or pockets.

Leave it on for 15 minutes to absorb the grease and dirt.

Remove any excess with a damp cloth or clean napkin.

Why does it work?
Salt has an absorbent and disinfecting effect.

Cornstarch traps grease and helps the surface regain a clean, dry appearance.

This method is ideal for fresh stains or light dirt buildup.

2. Toothpaste with Tooth Powder
Ingredients:

1 tablespoon of tooth powder (not toothpaste).

A few drops of water.
